The right to keep and bear arms, occasional attempts at satire, frequent recourse to sarcasm, and anything else I can think of. Oh yeah, and pipe smoking. Sometimes H.P. Lovecraft. And obscure Monty Python references when applicable.

Idiot with guns

I'm sure I could come up with something suitably sarcastic to say about this, but she looks so stupid already that I don't think there's much point in it. I might have to p-shop this before I'm finished with it, though. UPDATE: Maybe she should have a little chat with these ladies. (Tnx to Conservative Scalawag).

GunBloggers.com

on Sun 27 May 2007 10:03 PM CDT
I noticed a reference to my site just a little while ago from a site called GunBloggers. It's an offshoot of Liberty News. Here's the announcement about gunbloggers.com from March 1. "This is similar to the TTLB GunBlogs community, except that it works." Heh heh. It works fast, too. A post of mine appeared there within only a few minutes of its posting. It's new to me. So is Liberty News. Gunbloggers.com isn't as pretty as TTLB, but like he said, it works. So you might want to check it out. Also, it looks like if you are in the TTLB Gunblogger Community, you are automatically in GunBloggers.

The Mateba auto-revolver in GITS
by

on Sat 26 May 2007 10:30 PM CDT
I found a couple of new (to me) pix of the character Togusa wielding his Mateba 357 Magnum from Ghost in the Shell. This one doesn't show any really good detail, but it's fairly clear that his revolver is different. This one shows a great view of how different the Mateba is. My favorite episode of GITS is called, I think, "One Angry Man." The rest of Section 9 carry semi-auto handguns in 5.7mm. Togusa is the only one who uses an archaic weapon: the Mateba auto-revolver, which in the time frame of the story, is considered obsolete. In "One Angry Man," Togusa comes across a full prosthetic man (basically a human brain in an android body) attacking a woman. Togusa shoots the attacker six times, then reloads and shoots him again, trying to disable his prosthetic body without killing him. Although the man is badly damaged, he still manages to shoot and kill the woman he was originally attacking. Then a lawyer tries to show that Togusa was at fault for the woman's death--not her real attacker, but Togusa--because he was using an old, obsolete weapon instead of something more modern that was capable of more rapid fire and that could fire more rounds before requiring reloading. I've always thought that that was exactly the kind of insane argument that could actually happen in today's screwed-up world.

Bigger than bigger than Hogzilla
by

on Sat 26 May 2007 01:30 PM CDT
In all the furor over the most recent giant hog killing, most people seem to have overlooked the fact that there was already a feral hog bigger than the fabled Hogzilla. I blogged about it last January. No need to post the photo of the most recent specimen here, it's been all over the place already. I want to talk about the person who shot this beast. Jamison Stone is 11 years old. He stands 5 feet, 5 inches high. He took this huge hog with a 500 Smith & Wesson Magnum. Jamison and his dad tracked this hog for more than three hours. During this time, Jamison fired 16 rounds. So the next time you hear someone complain about a 357 Magnum having "too much recoil," make sure they know about Jamison Stone and his 500 S&W Magnum.

G&A TV Torture Tests
by
alandp
on Sat 19 May 2007 09:28 PM CDT
Finally got around to watching all the Outdoor Channel gun shows that I tape on Wednesday. I hit the fast-forward button quite a lot this time because a lot of that stuff just doesn't thrill me. I mean, watching a shooting match on TV is about the same as watching someone fish.
I do always get a kick out of the torture tests they've been doing on Guns & Ammo Television. This time they grilled an XD9 (not loaded, of course) on a charcoal grill while also grilling some chicken. They gave the gun four minutes on each side. This one was a little more interesting than usual, since I own an XD40.
The only apparent damage was from the actual contact points of the polymer with the grill. Otherwise the heated air inside the grill didn't seem to have much effect. The most noticeable damage was that the magazine would no longer stay seated. They had to tape it across the bottom to keep it in place. They also taped the grip safety and vised it down to shoot with a string on the trigger. Everything still worked.
Some people might hate them for doing these things to perfectly good guns, but it's not like someone else is being deprived. And this time at least, it was only a 9, so...

I spent some time today hunting down more anime/manga graphics. I'm still hoping that someday I'll find a really good one of his cross in action.

New addition to the blogroll
by
alandp
on Sat 12 May 2007 09:17 PM CDT
I don't usually make this kind of announcement because my reading habits tend to fluctuate, but what the hey. I don't remember how I stumbled across this blog, but I marked a few posts to go back and read when I had more time, and found them interesting. Time to Shoot is a new blog, begun this January, with only 12 posts thus far. But its author is one of those gunbloggers who writes about the nuts & bolts & history of guns, rather than the politics. And you know, sometimes it's really refreshing just to have fun reading something informative instead of constantly trying to keep with with the continual assault on our rights. Anyhow, check it out, and you might find it interesting also. Oh, I almost forgot. Since I read everything with Bloglines and never actually look at a blog unless I want to leave a comment, this won't really bother me, but he has some kind of popup ad thing installed. Firefox with Adblock seems to take care of it, though.

Temporal ammunition
by

on Sat 12 May 2007 06:08 AM CDT
That "Extreme Shock" ammo recently got some press. Well, I am automatically suspicious of all gimmicky ammunitions, and this one is gimmicky out the yang. I did a Google of "nytrilium" and found this on The High Road: [Quote:] I doubt that the intended test subject can tell the difference between those and an old reminton or federal slug.
[Reply:] There you'd be wrong.
It's a little known property of "Nytrilium-Tungsten composite material" that if it impacts a solid surface the subatomic reaction thus generated is actually strong enough to open a small, temporary rift in the space-time continuum.
This rift allows the subject's incapacitating agony on impact to be transferred back in time through his embryonic self in the womb to his mother. the poor woman.
That agony would also be simultaneously transferred forward in time if the "ExtremeShockTM Explosive Entry tactical defense rounds" were not so uniformly lethal as to leave the subject unable to procreate and thus leave no progeny to feel the forward-projected pain. Heh. (Misspelling in original). Fits has some comments also. UPDATE and bumped to the top: Now that Blogspot has taken its Ex-Lax and Fits is able to post again, re-check the link above. He has a link to a very interesting analysis of this ammunition. Snake oil salesmen, hucksters, charlatans. Even "liars" would not be too strong a word. And Shooting Wire got sucked into it. [shakes head sadly]

Target Practice
by
alandp
on Sat 05 May 2007 01:38 PM CDT
I gave the e-postal match a whirl this morning, and am completely hopeless on those tiny red circles. I could hit all around them, but actually hitting the red was obviously going to happen only by accident. At 15 feet I nailed them quite handily, but at 25 it was a futile endeavor. I shot up about 2 1/2 CO2 powerlets worth of pellets anyway, both at the golf target and some standard targets. I think that with regular practice I could get pretty good. This is my air pistol. It's just a cheap Crosman 1008, and it seems generally accurate up to 25 feet, but occasionally there were fliers that were not my fault. When you can see the pellet skew sideways through the air you know something's not right. I easily chewed out the 10-ring of an 8" shoot-n-see target at 25 feet with it. The 10-ring of those targets is about twice as big as those little bitty red circles on the golf target, and this is a rare case when I think that I am more accurate than the gun. The pellets were Crosman Premium wadcutters. I think a good quality air pistol would really help in my staying in shooting practice. I've never really investigated air pistols. If anyone has any recommendations, leave a comment. ADDENDUM: Or should I be looking at some Airsoft guns instead of typical BB/pellet guns? I'm more interested in getting an air gun that is a close replica of a real gun that I'm likely to be using than in pinpoint accuracy, so that I can use it to practice drawing and point-shooting at close range. Later I might also consider something like a Beeman for actual target shooting. If only gunfire didn't spook the peasantry so.

Sig Sweepstakes
by

on Sat 05 May 2007 10:00 AM CDT
I don't remember how it happened, but I somehow got on the SigArms email list. They have a monthly gun-giveaway sweepstakes. Here's the one for May, in case you were not aware of it and you feel like entering. It's for a P239 in 9mm with "Contrast Sights," whatever that is. I don't own a single Sig, therefore can't comment on them. But a free gun is never a bad thing, now is it?

Pellets at Wal-Mart
by
alandp
on Fri 04 May 2007 05:23 PM CDT
I stopped at Wal-Mart on the way home today and bought some pellets. When the cashier flunky scanned the box, it beeped to alert her to make sure I was of age. Ridiculous. If I am ever elected Supreme Overlord and Dictator-for-Life of the Multiverse, I will put a stop to that practice immediately. In fact, all kids will be encouraged to purchase their own BBs and pellets and become proficient with their use. Except for that Mitchell kid next door. He's a menace. When I was a kid I used to walk down to the icehouse on the highway while I was waiting for my dad to come by and pick me up after school to buy my own BBs. Sheesh. By the way, just now as I was looking for pellet pictures I stumbled across this. I don't know if this actually improves performance, but I am certainly intrigued. I don't think they would work in my pistol, but if I ever bought myself a decent hunting-quality pellet rifle I would definitely give them a try.

JPFO Alert: The No-Guns Gunshow
by
alandp
on Tue 01 May 2007 05:29 PM CDT
After reading an advertisement for a Reno, NV gun show in a firearms magazine, William D. Maniaci, owner of Maccabee Arms LTD (www.MaccabeeArms.com) purchased two tables for the event, which was to be held at the Boomtown Hotel and Casino. Like many firearms dealers, he invested heavily in stock to be sold at the show.
Last week he received a letter stating that "In light of the recent unfortunate incident at Virginia Tech," firearms would not be allowed to be displayed or sold at the show. That's right -- the "gun show" is now a "sporting goods and accessories" show. Read more at JPFO.
