About 12 years ago, when we had recently moved in here after getting married, and my late dog Baloo was still a youngster, I was doing some stuff outside.  I don't remember what I was doing specifically, just puttering around the yard.  We live on 5 acres, and at that time both 5-acre lots on either side of us were empty.  The nearest house was about 150 yards away.  My wife wasn't home at the time, and this was before our first child was born.

As I was just doing my yard work, I suddenly heard a strange, high-pitched, echoing call..."Aaaaaaaalllllaaaaaaannnnnnnn."

I have no idea where this sound came from.  People speak of a shiver going up their spine.  Something went up my spine, but it was more like a bolt of electricity than a shiver.  I spun, goosebumps breaking out all over, trying to zero in on this sound that had come from the vacant lot next to us.

Baloo came completely unglued.  I had never seen him like that, before or since.  His fur was standing out in all directions and he ran to our property line, baying ferociously.  He wouldn't go past the property line, even though there was--and still is, for that matter--nothing to mark the line.  Just continuous tall grass and trees, like all the rest of the brush around us.

I thought maybe someone at the next lot over was making some kind of noise that I mistook for my own name, so I walked through the brush to look.  No one was outside there.  Baloo still wouldn't move past the property line.  He refused to follow me.

I went back to my chores and a few minutes later it happened again.  That echoing, keening call that sounded like my name.

"Aaaaaaaalllllaaaaaaannnnnnnn."

Baloo went nuts again.  Like the first time, he ran right up to the edge of the property and stopped, fur standing out, baying ferociously.  He was part hound and didn't actually bark--he bayed like a hound.  I felt like my own hair was standing up, and I still couldn't find anyone who might be making this noise.  I was thoroughly creeped out.  I gave up and went inside.  Baloo crouched on the porch right in front of the door and continued to growl and go into spurts of baying sporadically for some time before he quieted down.

True story.  I have no clue what was going on.  It was just really weird and spooky.  It still creeps me out just writing about it.
