A chronicle of vile and pernicious truths.
About This Blog
The right to keep and bear arms, occasional attempts at satire, frequent recourse to sarcasm, and anything else I can think of. Oh yeah, and pipe smoking. Sometimes H.P. Lovecraft. And obscure Monty Python references when applicable.

View Article  Vintage Gun Ad 1950s/60s: Savage Fox Double Shotgun

This may not be entirely accurate, because I haven't spent a lot of time researching this one.  Fox was a gun company known for its shotguns which was bought by Savage.  Savage produced Fox shotguns for several decades, as far as I can tell.  Based on the batch of ads this came in, I can only say this ad must be late 50s/early 60s.

I think Savage produced Fox shotguns well into 80s, and they were known as a line of affordable doubles.
View Article  The Decocker
Someone was G00gling for a description of what a decocker does.  That's one thing I can tell you.

A decocker is simply a switch/lever that drops the hammer without danger of discharge.  The post that this G00gl3r ended up on was about the Walther P22, which uses the trigger itself as the decocker when the safety is "on."  Perhaps the most well-known decockers are those pistols in the Ruger "P" series, which have a small ambidextrous lever at the top back of the slide which will drop the hammer when the lever is twisted down.  This is arguably a safer way to return a pistol to the not-cocked condition--arguably safer than manually easing the hammer down with the thumb while pulling the trigger.  I have one old post about the Ruger P95D ("D" stands for "decocker"), just check the right sidebar.

I say "arguably" because I'm certain someone out there would argue that it's not safer.

I don't like the concept of the trigger decocker as is on the P22.  I think if you're going to have a decocker, it should be a totally seperate control, like on Rugers.

And of course, you should always ensure that the muzzle is pointed in a safe direction before dropping the hammer, regardless of how you're going to decock the gun.

In Search of the Second Amendment

The TRUE story of the American right to arms is told by some of the greatest names in American constitutional law -- professors at Yale, UCLA, Fordham, George Washington University, George Mason University, and other institutions, as well as by lifelong scholars of the Second Amendment, such as Steve Halbrook, Dave Kopel, and Don Kates.
