Front Sight, Press has an interesting comparison of the .44 Special vs .357 magnum for carry.
It seems to me that .357 is generally cheaper and easier to find.
Back when I was looking to buy a .357 snubbie, I noticed a plethora of .44 Special snubbies at the gun show that day. I don't remember seeing any such ammo, however. Maybe it was there and I just missed it, but if it was there, it was hard to find. No such problems finding .357 ammo, though.

For those that don't roll their own, a .357 can of course shoot everything from a .38 mouse load to a barn burning Double Tap or Buffalo Bore smoker. Not that the .44 is anything to snub one's nose at, but there's this stuff called modern ammunition that has alla these neat new bullet designs that Front Site Press might be interested in learning about. Bottom line for me is that I've never shot anyone with a .44 Special so I don't know how quick they fall down and go mommy.

Yep, I'm a dinosaur, completely stuck in the 19th Century.
A couple of things you should know: (1) I didn't write that article, but I thought it was interesting. (2) I don't even own a .44 anything and have no plans to acquire one, although I think they're kind of kewel. (3) Jim had a lovely old 624 snubby at our last session, but we couldn't shoot it because nobody had any ammo for it. (4) .44's weigh a tonne (notice archaic spelling), and they're really big. Were I to carry that much metal, it would be another beloved relic, The M1911 .45 ACP (but I might break down a stoke it with some of those new-fangled +p hollow-points). |
